Windows 11 Update Breaks Mouse Cursors, Turns Wallpapers Black
A recent Windows 11 update has been causing issues for users, including broken mouse cursors and black wallpapers. The optional update, known as KB5120998, was released on August 27, 2026, and is intended to bring changes to the Taskbar, Start Menu, and Windows Search.
However, numerous users have reported that their mouse cursors are being changed or reverted to default settings after applying the update. Some have also experienced issues with wallpaper changes, where their chosen background turns black after restarting their system.
Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and included a note in their release notes stating that mouse cursor personalization settings may be changed or reverted to standard settings following installation of Windows updates released on August 27, 2026 (KB5120998) and later.
