Windows 11's Big Design Upgrade: What Happens to Control Panel?
Microsoft's Windows 11 is undergoing one of its biggest design upgrades yet, with several legacy features getting a WinUI revamp. The company has been testing modern versions of the Run dialog, Properties sheet, and Print Management app, among others. However, one question remains: what about Control Panel?
According to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans, the company still wants to move all remaining Control Panel features to Windows Settings but doesn't plan to remove it anytime soon. This is because usability comes first, and design later.
The company has already migrated some of the most used Control Panel features, such as Bluetooth settings, to Windows Settings, giving users fewer reasons to open legacy features. However, there are still some old dialogs that send users back to Control Panel, such as adding a new printer manually from Windows Settings.
Microsoft's head of design previously said that the company intends to migrate all old Control Panel controls into modern apps but is taking a careful approach due to legacy network and printer devices or drivers. The modernization of Windows 11 continues in full swing, with several 'modern' features already being tested in preview builds.
