Windows Server Cumulative Updates Cause Remote Desktop Failures
Microsoft's September cumulative updates have caused issues with Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server systems. The affected updates, KB5122876 for Windows Server 2019, KB5122882 for Windows Server 2022 and KB5122871 for Windows Server 2025, were released on September 8 in Microsoft's monthly security update cycle.
Affected servers typically operate normally for a few hours after installation before Remote Desktop connections begin to fail. Existing sessions can become unable to disconnect or log off, and new connection attempts hang for an extended period before timing out.
Administrators have reported the same pattern across separate environments, with one administrator stating that 'All terminal servers in our environment are failing (sessions dropping, no new connections possible, only solution is a hard reset) within a day.'
