WM Advances Autonomous Landfill Equipment Development
WM is taking another step towards creating the 'landfill of the future' by collaborating with Caterpillar to test autonomous equipment. Building on a successful pilot of remote-controlled heavy equipment, WM will now work with Caterpillar to develop an autonomous landfill compactor.
The pilot project, which began in late 2025 at WM's Marana, Arizona landfill, used Cat Command remote-controlled technology to remotely operate a bulldozer and move waste. The technology enabled improved operational efficiency and productivity, increased employee safety, and provided enhanced visibility through strategically positioned cameras.
John Morris, President of WM, said that leveraging innovation is key to reducing employee exposure to risk in challenging environments. He believes that these technologies will advance the careers of operators with new skills and enhance overall performance.
