X-Energy's AI-Powered Nuclear Reactor Push Hits 144-Gigawatt Mark
X-Energy, a company that went public in April, is using artificial intelligence to accelerate nuclear reactor development. The company's Xe-100 reactor design has been integrated with AI models, which can speed up design iterations, produce regulatory documentation, and optimize fuel fabrication.
As part of the Project Prometheus initiative, led by Idaho National Laboratory, Nvidia, and Amazon, X-Energy is contributing $10 million in capital along with proprietary reactor and nuclear fuel data. This collaboration has secured a total of $60 million from the Department of Energy.
X-Energy's primary customer commitments include agreements with Dow Inc., Amazon, and Centrica. The company's project pipeline consists of 144 reactors representing approximately 11.5 gigawatts of potential capacity.
The biggest obstacle for X-Energy is getting those reactors built. Nuclear projects have historically suffered from long development timelines, expensive engineering work, and construction delays. However, AI could potentially improve the economics of X-Energy's pipeline by shaving meaningful time and expense from processes such as design iterations, regulatory documentation, and fuel fabrication.
