Xbox Enforces Age Verification in Australia for R18+ Games
Australia has become the first country to enforce age verification on a major console maker's store. Starting in late August 2026, all Xbox and Microsoft Store accounts registered in Australia must complete an age-verification step before they can purchase or continue accessing apps and games classified R18+ under the Australian Classification Board's rating system.
The requirement applies uniformly to both console owners and PC players who buy through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on Windows. According to Microsoft, this change is explicitly tied to local law rather than a global product decision: 'As part of our compliance program in Australia, beginning late August 2026, adult Xbox accounts must verify their age to be able to access apps and games rated 18+ on the Microsoft and Xbox Store.'
Microsoft has given Australian users four separate paths to prove they're old enough to keep playing R18+ games. The options are email-based confirmation, a facial age-estimation 'selfie' scan, credit card verification, or uploading a government-issued ID such as a driver's license or passport.
