Xbox Layoffs Weaken Industry, Says id Software Dev: 'No One's Growing, No One's Learning'
Chris Hayes, lead services programmer at id Software and a Microsoft employee, recently shared his candid thoughts on the state of the gaming industry in an interview. He criticized Xbox's management for its repeated mass layoffs, stating that they prove that the leadership 'fundamentally don't understand art.'
Hayes argued that these layoffs not only harm individual studios but also have a broader impact on the industry as a whole. According to him, frequent cuts and cost-cutting measures are leading to worse games because developers no longer feel invested in their work.
'If you make a mistake, that's the last mistake you make as a team,' Hayes said. 'That team is done.' As a result, individuals don't have the incentive to care about the future of the game they're working on.
Hayes believes that the industry has lost its understanding of what makes a good game, which comes from experience and collaboration among developers. He emphasized the importance of learning from failures and taking risks, stating that 'failures are important too.'
