Yardeni Raises S&P 500 Price Target to 8,400 on Earnings Growth
Ed Yardeni has revised his price target for the S&P 500 to 8,400, representing an additional 8% increase from its current level of approximately 7,756. This prediction implies a third consecutive year with at least 20% gains.
The main reason behind Yardeni's optimism is the 'fabulous earnings momentum' driven by a strong economy, with S&P 500 earnings rising more than 50% on an annual basis in the second quarter and forward price-to-earnings ratio remaining slightly higher than its 10-year average of 19.
Another potential factor contributing to the market's upward trajectory is the resolution of the Iran war, which has kept oil prices high due to tensions between the U.S. and Iran. If the conflict is resolved, inflation could slow down, keeping the Federal Reserve on hold with interest rates.
The rapid growth in artificial intelligence (AI) investment, which accounted for half of GDP growth in the first quarter of this year, also supports the market's positive outlook. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon have seen their stocks rise after demonstrating the benefits of their AI investments, while those that couldn't do so experienced a decline.
