Yelp Embraces AI Era, Seeks Expansion Beyond Advertising
At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference 2026, Yelp executives outlined the company's shift towards an AI-driven strategy. The move marks a significant change for Yelp, which has gone through several major shifts since its inception over 20 years ago.
Citing the rise of Google and search engine optimization, followed by the mobile era, and now AI, Chief Executive Jeremy Stoppelman said that the company is entering the 'AI era'.
Yelp's data set is seen as uniquely strong for local search and commerce, with its local business information being integrated into various platforms such as ChatGPT, Apple, Meta, Bing, Amazon Alexa, and automotive systems. The integration aims to make Yelp's content more accessible and useful both within and outside the company's app.
The Request a Quote flow in ChatGPT uses a Model Context Protocol widget to capture user information and feed it into Yelp's system. This distribution strategy is designed not only to generate licensing fees but also to bring users back to Yelp's core platform.
