Young Women in Tech: Breaking Down Barriers with Representation

Rakhi Sachdeva, Microsoft's UK AI Workforce Strategy Lead, Central Government, recently spoke at Next Tech Fest, a networking event for young women in technology. She asked attendees to close their eyes and picture who builds AI tools, revealing images of men in suits and hoodies.

The exercise showed that even though the audience was comprised of young women interested in tech, they didn't see themselves as typical AI professionals. Sachdeva emphasized the importance of representation: 'If people don't see themselves represented, they can struggle to imagine a future for themselves in the industry.'

Sachdeva's own experience shaped her mission to encourage more young women into technology careers. She faced uncertainty when moving from India to the UK but discovered opportunities in tech through curiosity. Today, she uses her experience to challenge misconceptions about AI roles.

Sachdeva pointed out that AI professionals aren't limited to software developers. Designers, storytellers, researchers, and project leads all contribute to building AI responsibly. The message resonated with attendees, including Maneek Kaur Bhasin, who recently completed a degree apprenticeship in Leadership and Business Management.
