YouTube View Counts Set to Skyrocket as Google Aligns Metrics
YouTube view counts are set to rise dramatically in the coming weeks due to a change made by Google. The company has announced that it will align all video formats with its current standard for counting public views, which was previously only applied to Shorts. This new standard will count a view from the moment a video begins to play, from the very first frame.
The change is intended to bring consistency across the platform and eliminate metric confusion for creators. Google has stated that it has heard from creators who want to accurately understand their true exposure, which is why this update is being made. The new view metric will be applied globally starting on August 24th, 2026.
However, it's worth noting that this change does not mean that creators will earn more money for their videos. Google has clarified that creator earnings will continue to be based on 'Engaged Shorts views' and 'Engaged Watch Hours,' which can be viewed in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode.
