Zoox Puts Tesla on Notice as Driverless Robotaxi Service Expands to SF and Las Vegas
Amazon's subsidiary Zoox is expanding its fully driverless robotaxi service to San Francisco and Las Vegas, putting it in direct competition with Tesla's autonomous vehicle ambitions in these high-profile markets.
Zoox has been methodically building its footprint by launching its first fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas and testing vehicles across multiple U.S. cities.
Critically, Zoox operates without a safety driver, whereas Tesla is only beginning to remove safety monitors as of January 2026.
As of November last year, prediction markets assigned up to 57% odds that Tesla would launch robotaxis in California by June 30, but this never materialized.
