$1.5B BC Gas Royalty Blunder Tied to Spreadsheet Error
The British Columbia government has acknowledged a $1.5 billion error in natural gas royalty accounting, attributing it to a spreadsheet mistake involving currency conversion.
The blunder, which affects revenue projections for this and next four years, was first brought to the Premier's attention in July by the Treaty 8 First Nations via a letter that also criticized the incoming royalty changes slated for January 1, 2027. The government claims the error resulted from an overstatement of revenue due to Canadian dollars being mistakenly converted as American dollars.
The $300 million correction will be applied to provincial revenues annually, totaling approximately $1.462 billion. Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix described the mistake as 'serious,' but a 'human error.'
