Iran on Brink of Economic Collapse, Trump Declares Nation 'Failed'
President Donald Trump declared Iran 'a Failed Nation' on Monday, claiming it is economically and militarily broken due to renewed fighting with the US. According to Trump, Iran has no navy, air force, or currency, and its soldiers and police are not being paid.
The statement comes as Iran faces pressure from multiple directions, including tightened sanctions and a sharp drop in oil exports. The country's annual inflation rate is 66%, according to official data cited by Reuters, while the IMF projects an average consumer-price inflation of 68.9% in 2026.
Iranian leaders are acknowledging growing economic strain, with President Masoud Pezeshkian stating that exports and imports have fallen nearly 35% due to US sanctions and a naval blockade. The country's economy is expected to contract by 5.4% this year, according to the IMF.
Experts warn that Iran may be nearing an economic breaking point, with senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies Miad Maleki stating that Tehran needs roughly 1 million barrels of oil exports per day to sustain itself, about 1.5 million to avoid hyperinflation, and approximately 2 million to support development.
