$18 Billion Gold ETF Buying Suggests More Than Just Inflation Fears
Gold's recent price surge may be attributed to more than just inflation concerns. In August, investors added $18 billion to gold ETFs, the second-largest monthly inflow on record in dollar terms.
This influx of capital into gold ETFs is significant, as it indicates that investors are seeking protection beyond just an inflation hedge. According to Jurrien Timmer from Fidelity, 'gold is worth around $5k' based on his Gold & Liquidity regression between global M2 and gold.
While this model-based valuation is not a guarantee of future prices, it highlights the importance of considering the money available to pursue assets rather than just focusing on inflation-adjusted interest rates. Additionally, futures traders rebuilt bullish exposure during August, which can reinforce demand for gold but does not necessarily translate to physical metal purchases.
The distinction between flows and holdings is crucial in understanding the market dynamics. Flows indicate money entering or exiting, while holdings show the accumulated amount of metal. Fund value also reflects price changes, making it essential to read these metrics together before calling a rally durable.
