$357 Billion Surge: Top Mining Companies Rebound in August
The value of top 50 mining companies surged by $357 billion in August, marking the largest single-month gain since the series began in 2019. The total market value returned above $2.5 trillion for the first time since February, when gold prices were high due to bullion trading near $1,000 per ounce.
The gains were led by gold miners, which added $138 billion, a 31% rise in four weeks. Newmont and Agnico Eagle contributed significantly to this growth, with Newmont adding $34 billion after beating profit estimates despite lower output, and Agnico Eagle adding $29 billion on record free cash flow.
Copper prices also played a key role, with the red metal climbing to mid-$14,000 per tonne. Southern Copper rose 15.7% for the month, closing at $176.4 billion, just below Rio Tinto's $177.0 billion market value.
