$6 Diesel Prices and Extreme Weather Slam Illinois Farmer's Harvest
Cody White, a farmer in Maroa, Illinois, is facing a challenging harvest season due to extreme weather conditions. The area experienced multiple windstorms and tornadoes, resulting in 15-20 inches more rain than usual, which affected his corn crop. White's fields sat in water for most of June, leading to crown rot, tar spot, and top kill issues.
Despite the difficulties, White is optimistic about the potential yields from April-planted corn, although he anticipates a 25-30 bushel loss compared to last year. He attributes this loss to disease pressure following the excessive rainfall. The high fuel costs, particularly diesel prices reaching $6.39 per gallon on September 21, are also taking a toll on his operations.
The increased market value of crops is not making up for the losses due to higher input costs. White says, 'We're probably at least 25, 30 bu. off of last year so far on this.' The American Farm Bureau Federation reports that on-highway diesel prices are up almost 70% year over year.
