$6-Plus Heating Oil Prices May Be Here to Stay This Winter
As the winter months approach, Massachusetts residents are bracing for another expensive heating season. Heating oil prices have skyrocketed to $6-plus per gallon, leaving many homeowners wondering if relief is in sight.
The culprit behind these high prices is a global energy crisis driven by international conflicts and supply chain disruptions, according to Michael Ferrante, president of the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association.
Ferrante explains that the current situation is not unique to Massachusetts, but rather part of a worldwide energy economy affected by military conflicts. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the U.S.-Iran conflict, have contributed to higher costs and increased concern heading into winter, particularly in New England where millions of households rely on heating oil.
Ferrante does not see prices decreasing soon, even if global conflicts end, due to years of disruption that have damaged refineries, pipelines, and fuel distribution systems. He estimates that rebuilding these networks will take time, and consumers may not immediately benefit from any sudden drop in crude oil prices.
