$60 Billion: Ukraine Grain Blockade Sparks Global Food Price Fears
Ukraine's Minister for Agrarian Policy and Food, Taras Vysotskyi, has warned that the blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea export routes could cost the global economy $60 billion due to increased grain prices. The blockade has been intensified by Russia's strikes on Ukrainian vessels and infrastructure.
The minister stated that grain prices have already increased by 25% on average, with a potential annual increase of up to $60 billion in additional costs for consumers worldwide if the situation continues. Ukraine relies on its Black Sea export routes for around 90% of its agricultural commodities.
Vysotskyi noted that Kyiv is making progress in ensuring Ukrainian harvests reach the market through alternative transport corridors, including 'solidarity lanes' established by the EU. However, he expressed skepticism about trusting Russia's commitment to a potential moratorium on attacks, stating that Ukraine can 'never trust what's going to happen tomorrow.'
