$6.9 Billion Reserve Surge in Sri Lanka
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka announced that the country's official reserve assets have reached $6.9 billion at the end of August 2026, marking a five-month high and the third-highest reserves position this year.
This represents a 4.6% increase from July's record of $6.6 billion in US dollars.
The bank reported that foreign currency reserves grew by 5% to $6.69 billion, while gold reserves rose by 9.4% to $210 million.
The Central Bank stepped up its efforts to rebuild reserves by purchasing a record $579 million in foreign currencies from the domestic market in August alone, with net purchases exceeding $1.48 billion for the first eight months of this year.
