Abbott Declares Disaster Over Soaring Diesel Prices in Texas
Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a disaster due to soaring diesel prices and a worsening fuel shortage caused by global conflicts. The declaration allows him to lift some restrictions on commercial transportation, which should help alleviate higher costs for goods at grocery stores.
Diesel fuel is used in farming and shipping, so elevated fuel prices are passed through to consumers as higher costs for food and other essentials. To address this issue, Abbott has waived certain restrictions on the use of dyed diesel, a chemically identical but differently colored version of regular diesel.
Average diesel prices in Texas have reached $5.86 per gallon, up from $3.30 in early February. The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran has disrupted oil exports from the Middle East, leading to higher gas and diesel prices worldwide.
