Abdulrazaq Isa: Indigenous Energy Leader Transforms Nigeria's Petroleum Industry

Abdulrazaq Isa's journey from Lokoja to the center of Nigeria's energy conversation is a story of enterprise, persistence, and growing indigenous business leadership. Born on February 7, 1961, in Kogi State, Isa has built his career around finance, energy, and entrepreneurship.

After studying sociology at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, from 1979 to 1982, Isa began his professional life in banking, accumulating about 15 years of experience with African International Bank Nigeria Limited and Chartered Bank Nigeria Plc. His exposure to business development, project finance, and financial risk management disciplines served as a foundation for his eventual transition into entrepreneurship.

Isa was part of the team that established Safetrust Savings and Loans Limited, a mortgage finance institution that eventually became part of Sterling Bank. He then co-founded Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, an indigenous exploration and production company operating in Imo State. The company was awarded the Ibigwe marginal field in 2003 and transformed it into a producing asset under Isa's leadership.

The company's progress at Ibigwe became a notable example of what indigenous companies can achieve when they stay the course. Commercial production from the field commenced in 2008, with Waltersmith's production capacity growing substantially over time. Isa's ambition did not end at crude oil production; he took his business further by investing in refining.
