ABS Approves Samsung Heavy Industries' FLNG Liquefaction System Design
ABS, a leading classification society, has granted approval in principle (AIP) and completed a basic design review (BDR) for a natural gas liquefaction system developed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) units. The certifications were officially presented at Gastech 2026.
The system includes the full range of process systems needed for FLNG operations, with a key feature being SHI's proprietary SENSE technology. SENSE is designed to cool natural gas to extremely low temperatures, making it suitable for storage and transportation, a core function of FLNG units. This latest approval confirms that SHI's design development (FEED) is feasible for its intended application.
Matt Tremblay, ABS Senior Vice President of Global Markets, emphasized the significance of advancing liquefaction technologies for the FLNG supply chain. He noted that ABS is proud to support SHI in moving this technology from concept to real-world deployment.
Joonho Min, Vice President of the Offshore Engineering Team at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated that the ABS approval validates SHI’s SENSE liquefaction technology and engineering capabilities. He added that this approval strengthens SHI’s ability to independently execute complete FLNG engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects.
