ABS Greenlights Hanwha Ocean's Ammonia Multifuel System for LNG Carriers

A South Korean shipyard has secured technical approval for an ammonia multifuel system that enables LNG carriers to transition between fuels without replacing key components.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) granted its approval in principle to Hanwha Ocean, which developed the system integrating a multipurpose fuel tank and a fuel gas supply system.

The system allows for efficient supply of both LNG and ammonia to an electric-propulsion turbine, ensuring smooth operational transition between energy vectors according to vessel needs. This adaptability is seen as crucial in navigating evolving regulatory frameworks.
