Africa's Gas Producers Shift Focus to Domestic Consumption

Africa's emerging gas producers are shifting their focus from export markets to domestic gas consumption. Countries across the continent are prioritizing natural gas for power generation, industrial development, and regional energy security.

Mauritania is leading this trend with its Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project in Senegal, which began producing gas in late 2024. The project combines LNG exports with domestic gas infrastructure to support economic growth.

The country's N'Diago gas-to-power development aims to convert offshore gas resources into electricity and establish the first gas pipeline network. This $669 million, 230 MW gas-fired power project is expected to provide reliable power for industrial activity and reduce reliance on expensive fuel imports.
