Ag Market Surge: Fund Buying Drives Prices Past Multi-Year Highs
The agricultural market has seen significant surges in recent days, with corn, wheat, and soybeans reaching multi-year highs. Senior Market Analyst Darin Newsom attributes this trend to technical fund buying, which has driven prices up despite a lack of fundamental changes in the market.
Newsom notes that the funds' buying activity is unprecedented for this time of year, with over 500,000 contracts traded on Monday alone. This buying frenzy has pushed prices past $5.30 per bushel for December corn and $6.50 per bushel for wheat, levels not seen in two to three years.
While Newsom acknowledges that some end-user buying may be occurring, particularly in the March timeframe, he believes it is largely driven by algorithms reacting to geopolitical events rather than actual demand. He points out that commercial carry and export demand projections remain bearish, indicating ample supplies of grain will be available as harvest approaches.
