Agnico Eagle Outshines Barrick Mining as Gold Prices Decline
Agnico Eagle and Barrick Mining, both major players in the S&P/TSX 60 Materials Sector, may seem like straightforward bets on gold prices. However, their fortunes are not entirely tied to the price of gold.
The average realised gold price for Agnico was US$4,483 per ounce in Q2 2026, while Barrick's average realised price was US$4,417 per ounce. While these figures may seem close, a closer look at their All-In Sustaining Costs (AISC) reveals a significant difference.
Agnico Eagle reported an AISC of US$1,459 per ounce in Q2 2026, while Barrick's was significantly higher at US$1,866 per ounce. This translates to a roughly US$3,024 margin for Agnico and about US$2,551 for Barrick.
Barrick's costs are largely driven by its global operations across Nevada, the Dominican Republic, Africa, and Asia, which brings a mix of currency, tax, and political risks. In contrast, Agnico Eagle mines mainly in Canada, with further operations in Australia, Finland, and Mexico.
