Agricultural Prices Surge to 14-Year High Amid Conflict and Weather Chaos
Agricultural prices have reached their highest point in 14 years due to conflict and weather conditions, according to the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index. The index tracks 10 major agricultural and food commodities, which rose by 13% in August to $434.
Wheat prices are a key driver of this increase, hitting a three-year high due to the situation at Black Sea ports. A bushel of wheat (27.2 kg) reached $7.79 in late August, the highest price since February 2023.
Lachstock Consulting notes that if exports from the Black Sea basin do not resume, the market will face a multi-seasonal supply problem rather than a short-term logistical challenge. This is due to issues with wheat quality and export capacity in other countries such as Argentina, Canada, Australia, and America.
