AI Fueled Gains Offset Iran Tensions in Asian Markets
Asian stocks mostly rose in early trading on Wednesday, despite ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil shipments, remains largely shut down due to the conflict.
The global interest in artificial intelligence continued to boost some regional issues, while declining oil prices helped gear up optimism in oil-importing nations like Japan. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.6% to 66,227.55, while South Korea's Kospi jumped 1.6% to 6,849.92.
Oil prices continued to fall, with the US crude benchmark dropping $2.06 to $80.30 a barrel and Brent crude losing $2.31 to $86.27 a barrel. The tensions between the US and Iran seemed to escalate after the Trump administration announced new sanctions to further hurt Iran's economy.
Eric Schiffer, head of the Patriarch Organization, expects demand to continue growing in the AI sector despite some adjustments, as companies and governments can't afford not to invest in AI to stay competitive. He noted that 'there's a lot of fear about AI, those fears are based on the financing side, meaning that there is so much money that needs to be raised.'
