AI Warnings Send Tech Stocks Plummeting Amid Oil Price Surge
Tech stocks worldwide are experiencing a decline due to warnings from AI leaders about the need for a slowdown in AI development. The industry's top voices, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman, have expressed concerns over safety issues, such as the risk of AI systems taking control of the internet within six to 12 months.
Nvidia, which has seen its profits soar due to its role in training AI models, led the market decline with a 3.9% drop. Other tech-heavy stocks like SpaceX and Softbank Group also suffered losses after their respective leaders, Elon Musk and Masayoshi Son, expressed support for Amodei's warning.
The AI slowdown concerns have been compounded by rising oil prices, which reached $108.73 per barrel of Brent crude, a 3.9% increase. This has put pressure on financial markets, with the S&P 500 falling 0.8% and the Nasdaq composite tumbling 1.2%.
President Donald Trump has downplayed the need for his administration to address AI development, citing concerns over ceding America's edge in global competition. However, experts warn that unchecked AI growth could exacerbate inflationary pressures, which are already on the rise due to high oil prices and rising debt levels.
