Alaska lawmakers have started their third special session to discuss proposed changes to the state's LNG project tax structure. The session, which can last up to 30 days, began on Monday with a handful of legislators present as they waited for Governor Mike Dunleavy to introduce the legislation.

The governor believes that changing the project's tax structure is necessary to keep the proposed gas pipeline moving forward. The pipeline would span over 800 miles and transport natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to Nikiski, where it would be liquefied for export while also providing gas to Southcentral Alaska.

However, some lawmakers are cautious about the proposal, citing concerns about the potential cost to the state and whether it provides too many tax incentives. Sen. Jesse Kiehl, District Q, stated that 'every Alaskan, including the ones who don't get gas, are going to subsidize this.' He emphasized that the project should benefit everyone, not just those who receive gas.

Rep. Bryce Edgmon, 37th District, supports building the gas line but wants more time to review the details of the proposal. 'I don't know a legislator yet who doesn't want the gas line get built. And as soon as practically possible,' he said.
