Alaska LNG Project Secures More Buyers Ahead of FID
The $55 billion Alaska LNG project has made significant progress in securing buyers for its gas ahead of a final investment decision (FID). Lead developer Glenfarne Group is in talks with two more potential buyers to secure offtake agreements for an additional 3 million metric tons of LNG, bringing the total secured so far to over 13 million tons. This brings the project closer to its goal of covering 80% of its 20-million-ton target capacity before making a FID.
Japan's Tokyo Gas and JERA have already signed preliminary offtake agreements with Glenfarne Group, which owns a 75% stake in the venture, while state-backed Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) owns the rest. With these new talks underway, the project is expected to move quickly, according to Glenfarne CEO Brendan Duval.
The Alaska LNG project aims to establish itself as a major global energy export hub on the Pacific coast, providing a significant geographic advantage over other US LNG export projects. The shipping routes from south-central Alaska across the North Pacific offer a shorter distance to Japan and South Korea than to the Middle East, reducing transit times and increasing energy security.
