Alberta Business Leaders Sound Alarm on Separation Uncertainty

As Alberta's referendum on separation from Canada approaches, the province's business leaders are weighing in on the potential consequences. Adam Legge, president of the Business Council of Alberta, said that while some members may support separation, the majority are opposed to it. The council has launched a new website and videos to make the case for remaining in Canada.

The notion that a separate Alberta would be 'a master of its own destiny' is 'a fiction,' Legge said, adding that many factors, such as trade agreements, market access, currency, and interest rates, are outside Alberta's control. He noted that recent developments, like the proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast, have changed sentiment in favor of staying in Canada.

The Business Council of Alberta isn't registering as a third-party advertiser for the referendum but will continue to produce content on its website and social media channels. Other business organizations, such as the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the Canada West Foundation, have also weighed in against separation, citing potential economic consequences.
