Four Alberta companies are leveraging the province’s deep drilling expertise to tap into geothermal energy, a sector with a market potential worth billions. Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) has awarded $20.8 million in funding through its Drilling Technology Challenge to advance geothermal projects, part of a $37 million total investment. The technologies in development include an electric drilling robot, high-temperature pressure sensors, and multilateral drilling techniques designed to access superhot geothermal resources more efficiently.

ERA CEO Justin Riemer highlighted the global opportunity for Alberta’s drilling technology, stating, ‘The market opportunity for geothermal is worth billions and billions of dollars.’ While Alberta’s geology may not be ideal for geothermal, the province’s decades of experience in deep drilling could position it as a leader in developing geothermal projects elsewhere. The funding will support demonstrations in Switzerland and Utah, but Alberta stands to benefit through job creation, economic investment, and technological advancements.

The four companies receiving funding, Borobotics AG, Eavor Technologies, Phase Advanced Sensor Systems, and Rodatherm Energy, are testing innovative solutions to reduce the cost and complexity of geothermal development. Steve Grasby, a senior research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, compared the current challenge to the early days of oil and gas exploration, where developers initially targeted the easiest resources. ‘We have found the easy places to develop geothermal,’ Grasby said. ‘Canada does possess the expertise that’s needed to kind of unlock the next wave.’

Geothermal energy offers a renewable, around-the-clock power source, but reaching the hottest resources deep underground remains a hurdle. The Drilling Technology Challenge is funded through Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program, which reinvests payments from industrial emitters into emissions-reduction technologies. With about 30 per cent of previously funded ERA projects generating sales or attracting customers outside Alberta, the current investments could further expand the province’s influence in the global geothermal market.
