Alberta Cuts Provincial Fuel Tax to Zero Amid Soaring Oil Prices
The Alberta government has made a move to reduce the provincial fuel tax to zero, effective October 1 and lasting until December 31, 2026. This decision is being applauded by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who claim it will save hardworking Albertans hundreds of dollars over the next few months.
The provincial fuel tax in Alberta adds 13 cents per litre of gasoline and diesel, but with oil prices above $90 USD, the entire 13 cent per litre fuel tax is suspended. Currently, oil prices are above $80 USD, which means drivers would save about $10 when filling up a minivan and about $15 when filling up a pickup truck.
According to Kris Sims, Alberta Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, 'This is the right move by Finance Minister Jason Nixon because lowering the cost of fuel makes things more affordable and that's exactly what people need right now.'
