Alberta Ditches Fuel Tax in Bid to Ease Cost Burden

The Alberta government has decided to cut its provincial fuel tax down to zero, effective October 1st and lasting until December 31, 2026. This move is expected to save drivers hundreds of dollars over the next few months, with families saving around $350 by the end of December. The suspension of the fuel tax comes as oil prices have remained above $80 USD per barrel since March.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has welcomed this decision, citing that it will make things more affordable for people and businesses in the province. 'This is the right move by Finance Minister Jason Nixon because lowering the cost of fuel makes things more affordable and that's exactly what people need right now,' said Kris Sims, Alberta Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

According to Sims, drivers can expect to save around $10 when filling up a minivan and over $15 when filling up a pickup truck. Big rig truck drivers will also benefit from this move, saving more than $100 when filling their tanks with diesel.
