Alberta Emerges as Data Centre Capital of Canada
The province of Alberta has become the hub for data centre development in Canada due to its unique combination of natural gas, power generation expertise, and industrial infrastructure. The provincial government's deliberate strategy to position Alberta as a global destination for data centres has paid off with major tech companies like Meta announcing investments of over $13 billion.
Meta's proposed data centre campus in Sturgeon County will be powered by the nearby Greenlight Electricity Centre, a 932-MW combined-cycle natural-gas power plant. This setup allows data centres to build or contract their own power generation, which is crucial for providing the reliable electricity needed to operate.
The Alberta government's Data Centre Strategy has attracted an estimated $100 billion to $200 billion in potential private investment. The strategy includes a concierge service that streamlines the development process by connecting investors with regulators and provincial expertise.
