Alberta Emerges as Leader in Rare Natural Hydrogen Production
A study by InnoTech Alberta has found that Alberta, Canada has 'exceptional potential' for producing rare natural hydrogen. The province's rich geology and existing energy infrastructure make it an ideal location for the emerging field.
Natural hydrogen, also known as 'white' or 'gold' hydrogen, is highly sought after due to its nearly zero-emission properties. Unlike other forms of hydrogen production, natural hydrogen can be extracted directly from the earth without carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The study's authors believe that repurposing existing oil and gas wells and infrastructure could be a practical way to cut costs for drilling new wells for hydrogen production.
