Alberta Government Eyes Pipeline Overhaul for AI Data Centers
A leaked cabinet report has sparked controversy in Alberta, Canada, outlining plans to overhaul the province's natural gas pipeline system to support artificial intelligence (AI) data center construction.
The document, obtained by The Narwhal, recommends changing regulations to ensure all natural gas pipelines fall under provincial jurisdiction and creating two Crown corporations: one to oversee the pipeline system and another to build or bankroll new pipelines.
The goal is to incentivize private companies to invest in expanding the pipeline network, which TC Energy currently dominates. The document estimates that implementing these changes could cost millions of dollars, including potential legal battles with existing energy companies.
According to the report, AI data centers are a top priority for Alberta's government, with several major projects planned or underway. However, the province is struggling to provide sufficient natural gas access due to bottlenecks in the pipeline network.
