Alberta Independence Could Bring Regulatory Freedom, But Also Market Uncertainty
A recent report from the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy examines the potential consequences of Alberta separating from Canada, including its impact on the energy sector. The report notes that an independent Alberta would still have access to oil and gas markets, but with increased uncertainty around market access.
Robert Johnston, director of energy and natural resources policy at the university, stated that 'on the positive side, greater control of your regulatory framework' in a separate country. However, he also noted the negative side: 'greater uncertainty around market access.'
The report highlights the importance of continued market access for Alberta's energy sector, particularly to the US market, which requires a favorable attitude from Washington and strong world energy prices.
According to the study, Canadian energy firms would likely pause investment plans in the short term due to uncertainty surrounding separation talks. However, once the situation stabilizes, companies are expected to reassess their long-term investment plans.
