Alberta Must Act Now on Nuclear Energy Options, Says Advocate

Alberta needs to invest in nuclear energy options, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), according to advocate Cosmos Voutsinos. SMRs are a type of nuclear reactor that is smaller and more efficient than traditional reactors.

Voutsinos, a retired nuclear engineer from Lethbridge, has been advocating for the adoption of SMRs in Alberta for decades. He believes that the technology can provide a reliable and affordable source of energy, particularly for oil production.

SMRs use recycled uranium fuel rods to generate energy, which reduces waste and eliminates the risk of meltdowns or explosions associated with traditional reactors. Voutsinos notes that SMRs can produce high heat at a fraction of the cost of natural gas, making them an attractive option for industries such as oil production.

Voutsinos estimates that it will take around five years to develop an Alberta SMR and believes that commercializing and manufacturing the technology could create a captive market in the world. He suggests that Alberta should invest in developing its own SMRs to add value to the province's uranium resources and reduce reliance on imported energy sources.
