Alberta Must Act Now on Nuclear Energy or Risk Being Left Behind

Cosmos Voutsinos, a retired nuclear engineer and advocate for nuclear energy, warns that Alberta must invest in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to stay competitive in the emerging market.

SMRs are compact reactors that use recycled uranium fuel rods from traditional large-scale reactors to generate high volumes of energy. They offer several advantages over other sources, including high heat generation for a fraction of the price currently being generated by natural gas.

Voutsinos sees potential in using SMR heat to enhance oil production, which could lead to significant cost savings and efficiency gains for oil companies.

The Alberta government has recently invested in an unfueled small-scale nuclear reactor for education and research purposes at the University of Alberta. However, Voutsinos believes that the province must think bigger and make a substantial initial investment to commercialize and manufacture its own SMRs.
