Alberta Must Seize SMR Opportunity or Miss Out on Energy Future

Cosmos Voutsinos, a retired nuclear engineer and advocate for nuclear energy in Alberta, warns that the province must act now to secure a spot in the emerging Small Modular Reactor (SMR) market.

Voutsinos claims that SMRs are the perfect solution to traditional nuclear energy problems of safety and cleanup due to their modular design, which allows for easy fuel rod replacement and recycling. He notes that other jurisdictions such as Ontario and New Brunswick are already investing billions in SMR technology.

SMRs can generate high heat for a fraction of the price of natural gas, making them an attractive option for oil production. Voutsinos estimates that the development cost for one SMR would be around $15-25 million, which would be paid back within a month due to increased efficiency in oil production.

Voutsinos has been advocating for SMRs in Alberta for decades and has had conversations with government officials about investing in commercializing and manufacturing SMRs. He believes that it will take around five years to develop an Alberta-specific SMR, which could be produced on a large scale using assembly lines.
