Alberta Pauses Gasoline Tax to Combat Soaring Fuel Prices

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that her government will pause the gasoline tax starting October 1, saving drivers 13 cents per liter on gas and diesel. The move is aimed at helping combat high fuel prices, which have been driven up by global oil price fluctuations.

The province initially opted not to cut the gas tax in June but instead introduced $100 affordability cheques for most Albertans. However, Smith acknowledged that many residents were unhappy with the rebate program, citing concerns about its invasive and onerous application process.

Fuel prices have been a major concern in Alberta, where the government had predicted a $9.4-billion deficit this fiscal year due to low oil prices. However, the recent spike in global oil prices has led to a $2 billion surplus.
