Alberta Politicians Reject Using Oil, Gas as Trade Leverage
Alberta's energy trade with the United States has been a significant topic in recent discussions about Canada-US trade tensions. The Canadian Energy Regulator reports that most of Canada's exports of oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products go to the US.
Despite this, Alberta politicians have expressed reluctance to use the oil and gas sector as leverage against the US. Premier Danielle Smith has stated that imposing an export levy on energy exports would be more painful to Canadians than it's worth.
According to Smith, using oil and gas as leverage 'would absolutely devastate the Canadian economy' and affect not only Albertans but also people in other provinces.
