Alberta Seeks to Tap Rising Global Demand with Ambitious Energy Plans
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith outlined her vision for the province's energy future at the Global Energy Show in Calgary, citing the need for Canada to seize the opportunity presented by rising global demand for oil and gas. According to Smith, the world has fundamentally changed its views on energy, with nearly every major economy experiencing inflationary pressures due to inflated energy costs.
Smith emphasized Alberta's significant resource base, including more than 177 billion barrels of recoverable oil reserves worth over $12 trillion at current prices. She highlighted the province's skilled workforce and regulatory framework as key competitive advantages in developing resources responsibly and efficiently.
The Premier cited recent geopolitical developments, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and instability affecting energy transportation routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which have caused governments worldwide to rethink their assumptions about energy.
