Alberta Separatists Court US Support with Water and Oil Royalties Offer
Alberta separatists have been courting US support for independence by offering access to fresh water and oil royalties, according to a Globe investigation. The proposal was made in a document outlining how Alberta's separation could benefit both provinces.
The document mentioned providing the US with new pipelines through its territory, as well as land for a rail link to Alaska. This would help an independent Alberta pay for its transition costs, which are estimated to be high.
However, not all separatist leaders agree on what was proposed in the meetings with US officials. Dennis Modry, co-founder of the Alberta Prosperity Project, described the document and its contents, while Jeff Rath disputes this account, saying those proposals weren't discussed.
The investigation found that Republican political operatives from Michigan met with Alberta separatists to discuss voter-targeting technology just before the Oct 19 referendum. This meeting was arranged by David Parker, an organizer of the separation movement.
