Alberta Separatists Push for Independence in Face of Federal Control
Chris Scott, a former oil worker and Alberta separatist leader, has been hosting town halls across western Canada to promote independence for the province. The non-binding October 19 referendum on separation comes after years of mistreatment by the federal government, according to Scott. He claims that generations of his family have discussed the issue.
Scott's efforts are part of a larger movement that has gained national prominence, thanks in part to support from US President Donald Trump. Alberta's right-wing Premier Danielle Smith heads a coalition with many separatists and called her own non-binding referendum after a judge blocked a citizen-led initiative.
The Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has dismissed the move as 'a dangerous bluff.' He argues that Canada is working together on issues like a new west coast pipeline. However, some voters see this project as another example of Ottawa's control over Alberta's policies and economy.
