Alberta Separatists Unfazed by Pipeline Approval
The Alberta separatist movement remains undeterred by the Canadian government's decision to prioritize a new oil pipeline to the BC coast, according to leaders of the Pathway to Independence and Let Alberta Decide groups.
Cory Morgan, an organizer behind the Pathway to Independence group, stated that 'This doesn't change the system whatsoever,' in regards to the separation issue. He emphasized that the debate goes beyond the pipeline, with dedicated independence supporters pushing for a second referendum on separating from Canada.
The Canadian government announced the Pacific Link pipeline as a major project in the public interest, streamlining timelines and consultations to have shovels in the ground within a year. However, Keith Wilson of Let Alberta Decide sees this as an example of why Alberta should leave Confederation due to the lengthy process and resources required.
Sandy Bowman, mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, expressed support for staying in Canada, citing the value of cooperation between provincial and federal governments. However, other separatist leaders disagree, with lawyer Jeffrey Rath stating that Alberta should take control of its own natural resources and revenue.
