Alberta Surplus Swells to $2 Billion Amid Global Oil Price Surge
Alberta's government is on track to report its fifth consecutive surplus, thanks in part to high oil prices driven by global conflicts. The province announced a quarterly update that shows a $2-billion surplus for the first quarter of 2026-27, with year-end results for 2025-26 also expected to be in surplus.
The economic update highlights 2.3% real GDP growth and strength in energy, exports, and investment sectors. The unemployment rate has fallen to 6.6%. Finance Minister Jason Nixon credits high oil prices for the surplus, noting that every dollar increase in average price adds $680 million to Alberta's treasury.
Nixon stated, 'Alberta has been given an opportunity, and Alberta's government will not waste it.' The province anticipates a record-breaking Heritage Savings Trust Fund of $32.1 billion by 2026-27 year-end, meeting or exceeding budget forecasts.
